Diversification in Cambodian Rice Production: A Strategic Shift Towards High-Demand Varieties

In a significant announcement that may alter the landscape of the rice production sector in Cambodia, Oknha Chan Sokheang, the President of the Cambodia Rice Federation, has brought to light the immense potential of ten rice varieties that have been identified as having high demand in both domestic and international markets. This revelation comes at a crucial time as Cambodia continues to shape its agricultural strategies to meet global market demands more effectively.

Among these varieties, certain names stand out due to their robust market potential, yet, surprisingly, they have not been adequately exploited by local farmers for cultivation. The varieties that Sokheang spotlighted include Phka Romduol, Sen Kra Ob, and Sen Kra Ob 01, Sro Nge, Neang Ok-Neang Am, Chhma Prom, and sticky rice along with Neang Khmao rice. Additionally, traditional varieties like Neang Khon-Phka Knhey also find their mention, emphasizing their cultural and economic value.

Delving deeper, Sokheang specifically highlighted the Phka Romduol variety for its high-yield capacity and substantial market demand. Similarly, the Sen Kra Ob and Sen Kra Ob 01 varieties have been identified as crops with no shortage of processing mills, thus reassuring farmers about the viability of these seeds. This information is crucial for farmers who might be hesitant about switching to these more marketable varieties due to concerns about sales and processing capacities.

The rise in popularity of the Sro Nge variety demonstrates its competitive edge, not just domestically but also against similar strains from neighboring countries, indicating a shift towards more quality-oriented rice production that can stand tall in international markets. Moreover, the increasing demand for Neang Ok-Neang Am varieties in international markets underscores the growing global appetite for Cambodian rice, highlighting the country’s potential to expand its agricultural export portfolio.

A notable mention was Chhma Prom rice, especially the variety from Kampong Speu province, which is known for fetching high prices due to its quality and demand in the market. This indicates an opportunity for local farmers to concentrate on cultivating higher-value rice varieties that could significantly enhance their income.

Despite the known demand for sticky rice and Neang Khmao rice, it is intriguing that local farmers have not yet capitalized on the cultivation of these varieties. These types hold promise for lucrative contracts with large rice mills and can open new avenues for farmers willing to diversify their crop production.

Reflecting on Cambodia’s rice export performance in the initial seven months of 2024, the country exported 379,546 tons of rice to 64 target markets, generating revenue exceeding USD 280 million through the efforts of 53 rice exporters. The distribution among the types of rice exported showed a predominant preference for fragrant rice (70.52%), followed by white rice (24.30%), parboiled rice (3.16%), and barely 1.74% accounted for organic rice, with other varieties comprising the remaining percentage.

This strategic shift towards cultivating high-demand rice varieties could significantly enhance Cambodia’s position in the global rice market. By focusing on varieties with high market demand, Cambodia not only stands to improve its economic resilience but also ensures that its agricultural practices evolve to meet the changing demands of the global market. The Cambodia Rice Federation’s initiative to highlight these varieties is a critical step towards a more sustainable and profitable agricultural sector that benefits farmers and the national economy at large.
