In a significant stride towards fortifying its economic foundation and logistics capabilities, Cambodia has marked a new chapter in the development of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, under the guidance of Prime Minister Hun Manet. The recent inauguration of an additional 253-meter-long container terminal stands as a crucial development in enhancing the port’s existing infrastructure and operational capacities. This move not only consolidates Cambodia’s position in regional maritime logistics but also catapults Sihanoukville Autonomous Port into a new era of modernization and global competitiveness.
Prime Minister Hun Manet underscored the importance of Sihanoukville Autonomous Port as Cambodia’s sole deep-sea port, highlighting its pivotal role in catalyzing national development. The port’s strategic significance is underscored by its contribution to business revenue, alongside an increased volume of goods and containers handled, making it the cornerstone of Cambodia’s burgeoning economic landscape. Recognizing the port’s potential, the Royal Government of Cambodia has not only celebrated the achievements made thus far but also laid out ambitious plans for its expansion, with strategic developments in Kampot and Koh Kong serving to augment the deep-sea port capabilities.
During the inauguration, Hun Manet expressed gratitude towards the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and the diligent efforts of the port’s management and staff. Their commitment has been instrumental in delivering efficient services, thus bolstering Cambodia’s logistical and transport sectors’ competitiveness. The addition of the new container terminal is timely, intended to handle the surging demand for container traffic by enhancing the port’s modernization and capacity.
Strategic collaboration and vibrant cooperation were identified by the Prime Minister as the linchpins for propelling the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port towards becoming a competitive regional hub. He outlined a three-pronged recommendation focusing on improving performance, fostering collaboration through the ‘Dynamics of the Stakeholder System’ approach, and upholding the newly established container terminal’s operational excellence. These recommendations aim to streamline functions and responsibilities across various institutions and units involved, ensuring the port’s dynamic and synergistic progression.
The Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, with a history spanning back to its inception in 1956, has continuously evolved. The port now operates eight berths, all fitted with advanced lifting equipment, underscoring the country’s commitment to building a future-ready port. The new container terminal, dredged to a depth of 11.5 meters, boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including two QGC container loading cranes and six RTG container cranes, poised to enhance the terminal’s capacity significantly.
The meticulous planning and execution of the project, a collaboration with the Japanese company TOA Corporation, fostered under technical supervision by Nippon Co., Ltd. and Oriental Consultants Global, have culminated in a terminal that promises to reduce transportation costs and elevate Cambodian ports as preferred options for regional and global traders.
The expansion is not just about scaling physical infrastructure but envisions transforming the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port into Cambodia’s logistics nexus, thanks to the generous financial backing from the Japanese government and contributions from the Royal Government of Cambodia. This developmental stride, marked by the project’s completion in August 2024, sets the stage for a competitive, modernized port ready to face the challenges of increasing global container traffic.
As Cambodia continues to strengthen its logistics system and economic infrastructure through strategic port expansions, it underscores a comprehensive approach to national development. By optimizing its prime maritime gateway, Cambodia is poised not only to bolster its economic development but also to elevate its status in international trade and maritime logistics, ensuring the nation’s sustainable growth and competitive edge in the global arena.
