Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia said he was “proud and pleased” to welcome the FIFA World Cup to Cambodia for the first time.

On the occasion of receiving and raising the World Cup in Phnom Penh on June 15, 2022, the Prime Minister made his remarks.

The FIFA WORLD CUP, made of pure gold and weighing over 6 kilogrammes, landed in Cambodia for the first time on June 15, 2022, marking the trophy’s first appearance on Cambodian soil since its inception in 1974.

“On behalf of the Royal Government, I am immensely proud, like many other leaders of state and government, to host and raise this historic World Cup. Of course, this trophy is a symbol for humanity around the world, since it represents the billions of people who love football and the principle of fair play, which is always flagged before every match begins” the Prime Minister said.

As the current chair of ASEAN, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen said that ASEAN will make a joint bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 2034 or 2038.

“As the chair of ASEAN, I would want to see ASEAN bid for the FIFA World Cup in 2034 or 2038. To make this idea a reality, I will seek support from ASEAN heads of state and governments,” Prime Minister stated.

“ASEAN shall bid to host the FIFA World Cup to further strengthen the values of economic, cultural, educational, and sports cooperation in the ASEAN Community by engaging with global economic strength to fill ASEAN’s shortcomings from the influential World Cup event,” Samdech continued.

The World Cup parade takes place as Cambodia gears up to host the SEA Games-ASEAN Para Games in 2023, which will include football tournament.

On this happy occasion, the PM also urged sports fans all over the world to rejoice and support Cambodia’s first historic event, the SEA Games, which will take place in 2023 and will be the region’s largest international sport.
