On a recent visit to Cambodian provinces, Minister of Mines and Energy, Keo Ratanak, underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing the safety and health of workers in the mining sector. This initiative, according to a release from the Ministry of Mines and Energy, aligns with Prime Minister Hun Manet’s objectives to prioritize the welfare of mine workers.
Ratanak emphasized the government’s engagement with workers and their families, detailing plans to introduce stricter safety regulations aimed at minimizing workplace incidents and safeguarding Cambodian laborers’ lives.
The visit followed Ratanak’s leadership in a governmental technical group focused on fostering and supporting Japanese investments in Cambodia. Notably, Japan emerged as the fourth largest investor in Cambodia in the initial quarter of 2023, following China, South Korea, and Singapore. Japanese investments in Cambodia are predominantly in finance, construction, and real estate.
In terms of trade, Japan stands as Cambodia’s fifth-largest trading partner, with trade volumes reaching approximately $1.37 billion in the first nine months of 2023, as reported by the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE).
The Ministry of Mines and Energy has announced plans to revise its “Code on Mineral Resources,” which will include updated guidelines on mining practices, worker safety, and the role of mine inspectors. This revision aims to enhance the management and efficiency of the mining sector.
Further, the Ministry is set to conduct regular evaluations to ascertain the efficacy of mining sector management strategies. Key focus areas include geological surveying, efficient revenue collection from mining activities, and human resource development, particularly in technical and financial training. The goal is to boost productivity, utilize the local workforce more effectively, and reduce reliance on foreign specialists.
During his provincial visits, Ratanak expressed the government’s intention to bolster the capabilities of mine inspectors, particularly in areas concerning worker safety and health.
Additionally, the Ministry has launched welfare initiatives, such as the 13th blood donation drive in collaboration with the National Blood Donation Center, demonstrating a holistic approach to supporting community and worker well-being.
