Neak Oknha Kith Meng, the President of the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce (CCC) and Chair of the ASEAN Business Advisory Council Cambodia, has extended an invitation to Australian businesses to explore the myriad opportunities the Cambodian market has to offer. In his appeal, Kith Meng highlighted Cambodia’s role as a strategic entry point for Australian enterprises looking to expand their international presence, especially through Cambodia’s favorable trade agreements.
Under the governance of Prime Minister Hun Manet, Kith Meng noted, the Cambodian government has been steadfast in its implementation of business-friendly policies, upholding multilateral principles and international agreements to foster a transparent and investor-friendly climate.
This call to action was made during an official visit accompanying Prime Minister Hun Manet at the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit on 5 March 2024, which marked 50 years of dialogue relations in Melbourne, Australia.
The Cambodia-Australia Business Forum, a collaborative effort between the CCC, the Victoria Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and the CCC’s Representative Office in Melbourne, was a key event. With Prime Minister Hun Manet presiding, the forum saw participation from around 350 attendees, including the assistant minister for Trade, the minister for Industry & Trade of New South Wales, the CEO of the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and representatives from both Cambodian and Australian companies, as well as other relevant organizations.
At the forum, Kith Meng underscored the strong ties between Cambodia and Australia, built on mutual respect and diplomatic engagement, which have historically contributed to Cambodia’s economic trajectory. He expressed optimism about further enriching this bilateral economic relationship.
Reflecting on the past, Kith Meng reminisced about the 1980s when many Cambodians, including himself, sought refuge in Australia. Fast forward over four decades, and the narrative has shifted, with Cambodians now visiting Australia as tourists or business professionals, illustrating Cambodia’s journey towards peace and stability.
A highlight of the forum was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Cambodia Chamber of Commerce and the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, an event overseen by Prime Minister Hun Manet. This MoU aims to enhance trade, investment relations, and economic connections between the two nations.
The business forum concluded on a successful note, fostering dialogue on the investment landscape, trade prospects in both Cambodia and Australia, and facilitating the exchange of experiences with Australian firms currently operating in Cambodia.
