National Initiative for Circulation of Older US Dollar Bills Launched in Cambodia

Catering to the economic intricacies of currency management, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has declared the inauguration of a new policy designed to streamline the circulation of old, slightly torn, or stained US dollar banknotes throughout the nation.

Addressing a gathering of the Cambodian Oknha Association and the Housing Development Association of Cambodia at a gala dinner on Friday, August 2, Prime Minister Hun Manet laid out the government’s resolve to mitigate the challenges associated with the utilization of US currency, particularly in the bustling tourist city of Siem Reap.

The Prime Minister conveyed the findings and recommendations of Chea Serey, a key financial figure, who has examined the increase in the usage of compromised US dollar bills. The analysis revealed that the rise in such currency within the market was manageable, prompting the Prime Minister to officially sanction a decree effective nationwide immediately. “The National Bank is set to release a guideline,” he confirmed, announcing the immediate commencement for accepting these old, defaced US dollar notes across Cambodia.

Prime Minister Hun Manet took the opportunity to extend his gratitude to Chea Serey and the conglomerate of private banks that have played a pivotal role in this initiative—ensuring these older notes maintain their place in the everyday financial transactions within the local economy.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister elaborated on the major shift in policy regarding these US dollar notes. Previously, aging and worn notes faced the conundrum of being shipped back to be processed at the US Federal Reserve—a costly venture that involved the dispatch of roughly 11 million aging bills, incurred at a staggering expense of about 350,000 dollars.

By instituting this mechanism initially in Siem Reap, the government aimed to not only provide support to commercial activities and international travelers but also to monitor the influx of old US dollar bills into Cambodia. With the successful implementation in Siem Reap evidencing the feasibility of the program, expansion of this policy was an evident next step, leading to its nationwide application without any associated charges.

To echo this sentiment, the Prime Minister has called upon all private banking institutions, currency exchange services, and businesses to align with this strategic move and aid in facilitating a more liberal approach to transactions involving these US dollar notes. This is reflective of a proactive move to avert any potential frustrations or financial penalties that might arise from using these older bills, encouraging a widespread, inclusive acceptance across the myriad financial interactions in Cambodia.
