Prime Minister Hun Manet Highlights Confidence in Cambodia’s Healthcare Progress

by Surya Narayan

During the opening ceremony of the Techo Sen Koh Thom hospital in Kandal province on March 13, Prime Minister Hun Manet addressed the public’s concerns regarding Cambodia’s healthcare system. He emphasized that the vast majority of Cambodians opt for medical care within the country, while only a minimal fraction seek treatment abroad.

Manet responded to skepticism about the healthcare system’s advancements by comparing the small number of Cambodians traveling overseas for medical reasons to the millions who rely on local healthcare services. He pointed out that seeking healthcare abroad is a common practice worldwide, not unique to Cambodia. For instance, many Canadians and Americans travel to other countries for medical procedures, as do some Japanese citizens, depending on their needs and resources.

Highlighting the significant strides made in improving healthcare services in Cambodia, Manet mentioned that the country has become a destination for some foreigners seeking medical treatment. He cited various instances, ranging from heart surgeries to dental procedures, where patients from other countries have chosen Cambodian healthcare facilities for their needs.

Furthermore, Manet shared anecdotes of South Korean doctors expressing their respect for the competence of Cambodian medical professionals, despite acknowledging the challenges posed by the limited availability of cutting-edge medical equipment. This interaction underscores the growing recognition of Cambodia’s healthcare capabilities and the dedication of its medical personnel.

The Prime Minister’s remarks at the hospital inauguration aimed to reaffirm the government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare services and infrastructure in Cambodia, reinforcing the belief in the nation’s healthcare system’s potential to meet the diverse needs of its population and even attract patients from abroad.
