Cambodia’s football ecosystem has taken a giant leap forward with the inauguration of a state-of-the-art football stadium in Siem Reap, a project brought to life through the collaboration between SkaSports Investments Private Limited, a fully Indian-owned sports enterprise, and Angkor Tiger Football Club, a prominent team in the Cambodian Premier League.
The stadium, which hosted its inaugural game on November 9, 2024, is a landmark addition to the region, already renowned for its UNESCO World Heritage site, Angkor Wat. With a seating capacity of 2,000 and modern floodlights of 1500 lux, the stadium is a testament to the growing synergy between India and Cambodia in the realm of sports infrastructure.
A Year in the Making
According to R. Rohit, Director of SkaSports, the project was carefully planned over the past year. “We are thrilled to have completed Phase 1 of this construction and played our first game in the new facility. It’s a significant step forward for Cambodian football as this dedicated space will serve both our senior and youth teams,” he said.
Rohit emphasized that the stadium is more than just a sports venue. It aims to enhance the region’s football ecosystem by providing a platform for collaborations with the Cambodian Football Association (FA) and the Cambodian Premier League to host football-related educational programs.
Innovative Features and Revenue Opportunities
The privately-owned stadium spans over 3 hectares, encompassing the Field of Play, spectator stands, and parking facilities. It also features dedicated indoor warm-up areas in the Team Dressing Rooms, aligning with Asian Football Confederation (AFC) best practices. Sudhir Menon, another Director at SkaSports, highlighted the potential for generating revenue through innovative strategies such as naming rights for the stadium and stands.
“The infrastructure not only facilitates sporting events but also allows teams to monetize the facility during non-competition periods. Phase 2 of the construction is underway, which includes expanding seating capacity and adding roofing for the spectator areas,” Menon noted.
A Vision for the Future
The project also extends beyond sports, envisioning a transformative impact on the local economy and landscape. Situated on a 7-hectare land parcel, the stadium is poised to catalyze commercial and residential development in the area. A nearby property development featuring 100 villas has already garnered significant interest.
“We aim to expand further, exploring opportunities for commercial space development and partnerships that will enhance the region’s appeal,” Rohit added.
Strengthening Partnerships
The stadium’s construction follows another significant milestone for Angkor Tiger FC earlier this year, when TVS Motors, a renowned Indian brand, partnered with the club, securing branding space on the back of the playing jerseys.
The newly built stadium is not just a symbol of Cambodia’s growing passion for football but also a beacon of international collaboration and sustainable development.
