Sustainable Glamping Flourishes in Cambodia

Glamping, a luxurious take on traditional camping that integrates the allure of the outdoors with the comfort of modern amenities, is making significant strides in Cambodia, particularly with a focus on sustainability. This trend offers a unique blend of nature and luxury, appealing to those who seek the serenity of the natural world without sacrificing comfort.

Alexis de Suremain, the founder of the Maads brand, emphasizes Cambodia’s unique position to offer unparalleled glamping experiences, as the country is still crafting its hospitality niche, primarily overshadowed by the fame of Angkor. The burgeoning tourism sector in Cambodia is creating a demand for distinctive and high-end accommodation options, notes Sokchanlida Horn, Co-Founder and CEO of Solo Landscapes, highlighting the potential of glamping to satisfy this demand and draw both international and local tourists.

Cardamom Tented Camp stands out as a prime example of eco-friendly glamping in Cambodia, according to Lodge Manager Allan Michaud. The camp is noteworthy for its minimal environmental impact, reliance on solar energy, and comprehensive recycling initiatives. It also contributes to the conservation of 18,000 hectares within the Botum Sakor National Park, setting a benchmark for sustainable tourism practices.

Catherine Germier-Hamel, Founder and CEO of Millennium Destinations, views glamping as an ideal avenue for Cambodia’s tourism, capable of attracting discerning travelers seeking adventure and comfort in the country’s pristine natural settings. She advocates for in-depth market and feasibility studies to fully grasp the opportunities this segment presents.

Nick Ray, a contributor to Lonely Planet, acknowledges the expanding glamping landscape in Cambodia, citing pioneers like Canvas and Orchids and the eco-conscious Cardamom Tented Camp. The luxury of Shinta Mani Wild offers an opulent glamping experience, showcasing the diversity and potential of the sector.

Suremain believes that distinctive glamping offerings can set Cambodia apart from its neighbors. The development of “Jungloo” tents, designed for hot and humid climates and available at locations like Templation Resort in Siem Reap, exemplifies this innovation.

Statistical forecasts predict a robust growth trajectory for the Cambodian camping market, with revenues approaching $1.7 million and an anticipated annual growth rate of 19.53% leading to a market volume of $3.47 million by 2028. The projected increase in users and a significant shift towards online sales underscore the sector’s dynamic potential, promising a notable contribution to Cambodia’s tourism landscape and its sustainable development goals.
