Phnom Penh, July 2025 — The Institut français du Cambodge (French Institute of Cambodia, IFC) and Overseas Cambodian Investment Corporation (OCIC Group), one of Cambodia’s leading real estate and urban developer, have officially renewed their partnership to support the Villa Marguerite Duras residency program — a unique cultural initiative dedicated to promoting literature and the arts in Phnom Penh.
The signing marks a renewed commitment to fostering contemporary creativity and cultural dialogue between France and Cambodia, through an innovative public–private collaboration. The Villa Marguerite Duras residency offers French-speaking artists and writers the opportunity to carry out research and create new work while engaging directly with the communities.
At the heart of this initiative is a shared belief in the power of culture to connect people across borders. Rooted in the long-standing cultural relationship between the two countries, the residency reflects the spirit of exchange, mutual respect, and creative freedom. Named in honor of Marguerite Duras, the acclaimed 20th-century French writer and Prix Goncourt laureate, the Villa welcomes artists working across disciplines — from literature and photography to comics and visual arts.
Set within a peaceful and inspiring environment, the residency supports both artistic development and public engagement. Throughout the year, participating artists will take part in public programs led by the Institut français du Cambodge, including workshops, lectures, and dialogues in collaboration with local institutions such as Canadian International School of Phnom Penh (CIS), École Française Internationale de Phnom Penh (french International school of Phnom Penh, EFI), and CamTech University.
This initiative is part of the “Route des Résidences” network supported by the Institut français de Paris and the La Petite Escalère endowment fund. It is designed to amplify cross-cultural interaction and support the next generation of creators, educators, and thinkers.
OCIC Group’s support underscores the role of the private sector in promoting cultural enrichment. Alongside this partnership, OCIC has demonstrated its own commitment to cultural preservation, notably through the stewardship of iconic national landmarks such as the historic Independence Hotel in Sihanoukville and the Chenla Theater in Phnom Penh — facilities that hold deep historic and cultural value to Cambodia.
