With the receding pandemic offering a ray of hope, the travel and tourism industry is brimming with optimism for the year 2024. Seasoned experts and industry veterans have shared their visions for the future, and it’s abundantly clear that technology will be a driving force, shaping the trajectory of travel experiences in Cambodia and beyond.
William Lake, co-owner of Olive & Lake, believes that artificial intelligence (AI) will continue its steady integration into our daily lives, extending its influence to the travel sector. He anticipates travel companies and online travel agencies (OTAs) embracing AI to provide users with highly personalized travel recommendations and streamline the booking process. This would ultimately enhance the overall travel experience, making it more convenient and tailored to individual preferences.
Nicole Loretan, Sales and Marketing Manager at the Academy of Culinary Arts Cambodia, echoes this sentiment by highlighting the potential of digital platforms and technologies to elevate visitor experiences and simplify online bookings. She suggests that Cambodia should shift its focus towards promoting lesser-explored destinations, cultural events, and adventure tourism, thereby diversifying its tourism portfolio and catering to a wider range of travelers.
Steve Lidgey, General Manager of Travel Asia a la carte, envisions a yearning for more immersive and experiential travel in 2024. Travelers, he predicts, will seek opportunities to connect with local culture on a deeper level and extend their stays to fully immerse themselves in a destination’s offerings.
Craig Dodge, Director of Sales and Marketing at Phare Circus, emphasizes the advantages of AI tools for travel operators. These tools, he explains, can simplify the process of crafting compelling tour descriptions, blog posts, images, and other marketing materials that can inspire potential visitors. He acknowledges the challenge of keeping pace with the rapid evolution of technology but underscores the importance of adapting to stay relevant in the industry.
William Lake underscores AI’s growing significance in various aspects of our lives, emphasizing its potential to enhance efficiency, understand trends, and provide personalized solutions. He points out that major OTAs like Expedia, Trip.com, and booking.com have already begun rolling out initial versions of generative AI tools for their customers. While these tools are still in their infancy, he predicts significant growth and advancement in AI technology throughout 2024.
Some industry professionals advocate for Cambodia to venture off the beaten path to attract a broader spectrum of tourists. Loretan suggests leveraging Cambodia’s natural beauty for wellness retreats and incorporating traditional healing practices to appeal to health-conscious travelers. Despite the buzz surrounding AI and virtual reality (VR), the consensus remains that travelers ultimately seek unique, authentic, and immersive experiences. Thus, there will be ample opportunities for operators who can offer active, culturally rich experiences that set them apart from their competitors. In the end, the year 2024 promises to be an exciting chapter in Cambodia’s travel industry, as technology and authenticity continue to shape the traveler’s journey.
