The ambitious “Immersive Angkor” project, set to become Cambodia’s first 3D virtual museum, has garnered significant attention and support from industry experts and stakeholders. This innovative concept, aimed at enhancing the visitor experience at the Angkor Archaeological Park, received a resounding vote of confidence from Prime Minister Hun Manet during a recent meeting with project creator Geoffroy Ladet, Chief Executive Officer of Puy du Fou Asia in Paris.

Cambodia, as the rightful custodian of the Angkor heritage, has a unique opportunity to capitalize on its rich cultural legacy. The Angkor Archaeological Park has historically attracted millions of visitors, and industry leaders remain optimistic about its post-pandemic resurgence. “Immersive Angkor” represents a cutting-edge approach to preserving and sharing the history and culture of the Khmer empire.

KE BIN Soreasmey, CEO of Confluences, a key partner in the project, emphasized the significance of Angkor as a magnetic attraction for Cambodia. However, he urged caution against mass tourism, emphasizing the importance of delivering high-quality and immersive experiences to visitors.

The incorporation of 3D technology promises to revolutionize the way visitors engage with Angkor’s historical and cultural treasures. Chan Mun Wei, ESG Consultant at Swan & Maclaren Group, highlighted how virtual reality (VR) can complement traditional architecture-based tours. VR technology enables travelers to virtually explore destinations before making a decision to visit in person, enriching their pre-trip experience.

Catherine Germier-Hamel, CEO of Destination Mekong/Millennium Destinations, underscored the integral role of 3D and multidimensional technologies in the future of the tourism industry. These technologies not only add value to the tourism value chain but also enhance real-life travel experiences, fostering a deeper understanding of the destinations.

Craig Dodge, Director of Sales and Marketing at Phare Circus, emphasized the increasing role of technology in the tourism sector. Artificial intelligence (AI) is aiding tour operators in crafting more compelling tour descriptions, while chat apps enable instant responses to travelers’ inquiries.

Soreasmey emphasized that while visiting the Angkor temples is awe-inspiring, comprehending Khmer history and civilization can be intricate. “Immersive Angkor” aims to provide visitors with additional insights into the Khmer empire, shedding light on not only its prominent figures but also the society of the era.

Furthermore, VR technology opens doors to a global audience, enabling an immersive experience for individuals who may not have the opportunity to visit iconic sites like Angkor Wat in person. This virtual accessibility places Cambodia prominently on the world stage, fostering cultural exchange and understanding.

As the “Immersive Angkor” project gains momentum, it stands as a testament to Cambodia’s commitment to preserving its heritage and offering enriching experiences to visitors. With the support of industry experts and cutting-edge technology, Cambodia is poised to redefine the way the world engages with its historical and cultural treasures.
