On the morning of September 2, 2024, the Australian Navy warship HMAS Perth (FFH 157) arrived at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port in Cambodia, commencing a three-day port visit scheduled from September 2nd to 4th. This visit represents an ongoing commitment to fostering and deepening ties between Australia and Cambodia.

HMAS Perth, an Anzac-class frigate led by Captain Ben Dalton, is distinct for its considerable capabilities. The ship measures 118 meters in length and 14.8 meters wide, stands at 32.47 meters tall, and has a draft of 6.4 meters. With a displacement of 3,900 tonnes and propelled by engines capable of reaching speeds up to 32 knots, HMAS Perth also boasts an onboard complement of an MH-60R Seahawk helicopter. The ship arrived with a crew complement comprising 32 officers, 158 crew members, and three helicopter pilots, amounting to 193 personnel in total.

Upon docking at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, the Australian vessel was greeted by a host of Cambodian naval officials including Admiral Mean Savoeun, the Deputy Chief of Staff of Ream Sea Base, along with several other high-ranking admirals. The warm reception highlighted the friendly relations and mutual respect that underpin the bilateral engagement between the two nations.

The primary objective of this port call is to strengthen the cooperative ties between Cambodia and Australia. These efforts are not just pivotal in enhancing diplomatic relations but also play a significant role in regional security and solidarity. Early interactions in this visit included structured engagements between naval representatives of both countries, where discussions focused on shared security interests and ways to enhance maritime cooperation.

Moreover, the visit includes a series of cultural exchanges and goodwill gestures, such as community interactions and joint activities between the ship’s crew and local populations. These interactions are designed to foster a better understanding and cultural appreciation between the peoples of both nations.

HMAS Perth’s visit to Cambodia is just one of the numerous engagements Australia partakes in Southeast Asia, reflecting a broader strategy aimed at maintaining and boosting alliances in the region. Established diplomatic relations since 1952 have seen Australia playing an active role in Cambodia’s path towards development and stability. This includes support in various sectors like education, public health, and infrastructure development, which are crucial for the development of a resilient and prosperous Cambodia.

This goodwill visit by HMAS Perth not only highlights ongoing commitments but also shines a light on future possibilities for collaboration in areas such as defense training, maritime security, and humanitarian assistance. By continuing these engagements, both nations aim to build a framework of peace and stability in the region, given the evolving security dynamics.

Conclusively, as HMAS Perth casts its anchor at Sihanoukville’s docks, it symbolizes a steadfast alliance and a shared vision for peace and cooperation in the region. The visit serves as a significant stride towards fostering a durable partnership, reinforcing ties on both a strategic and grassroots level, paving the way for enhanced bilateral cooperation between Cambodia and Australia. Both nations look forward to a future where such interactions are regular, deepening camaraderie and understanding between their peoples.
