Phnom Penh – Acting Head of State Samdech Techo Hun Sen on Thursday(Sep 25) morning received the credentials of Vivian Loss Sanmartin, the first Ambassador of Brazil to Cambodia, marking a milestone in the history of Cambodia–Brazil relations.
Samdech Techo warmly welcomed the establishment of Brazil’s first embassy in Cambodia, describing it as a significant step toward deepening bilateral cooperation. On behalf of His Majesty the King, he extended greetings to Ambassador Sanmartin, noting that her appointment reflects Brazil’s commitment to enhancing ties with the Kingdom.
According to Senate spokesperson Chea Thyrith, Hun Sen underlined that the presence of the Brazilian mission would play a vital role in boosting cooperation across multiple sectors.
Ambassador Sanmartin expressed her gratitude for the audience and reaffirmed her commitment to advancing bilateral relations, with a strong emphasis on economic and trade cooperation. She also encouraged closer government-to-government and legislative collaboration, suggesting that both countries strengthen parliamentary exchanges.
Hun Sen welcomed the ambassador’s remarks, stressing that economic growth forms the backbone of bilateral ties. He proposed the creation of parliamentary friendship groups within Cambodia’s National Assembly and Senate to foster stronger inter-parliamentary relations.
On sports cooperation, Hun Sen highlighted Brazil’s global reputation in football and volleyball, suggesting that Brazilian coaches could help train Cambodian athletes. Ambassador Sanmartin responded positively, affirming that Brazil would consider dispatching coaches in the near future.
The two sides also exchanged views on regional matters. Hun Sen briefed the ambassador on the Cambodia–Thailand border situation, while Ambassador Sanmartin voiced support for peaceful resolution, urging respect for the ceasefire agreement and a return to normalcy.
The establishment of Brazil’s embassy in Phnom Penh is expected to open new opportunities for strengthening economic, cultural, and people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.
