Apart from trade and investment ties, both countries have cooperated on important issues in the region, such as the security and stability of the ASEAN region and managing transnational issues such as terrorism, human trafficking, and climate change.
Australia has also provided significant development assistance to Cambodia over the years. According to a press release of the Australian Embassy in 2022, Australia has invested over AUD 120 million in aid to Cambodia. The funds have supported Cambodia’s economic growth, health, and education sector, as well as its efforts to strengthen governance, rule of law, and human rights.
The upcoming ASEAN-Australia Special Summit, which will be hosted by Australia in March 2024, is expected to provide an opportunity for both countries to further strengthen their relations and cooperation. Through this summit, both sides can explore new avenues of cooperation to further develop their relations and enhance their strategic partnership.
In summary, the meeting between Prak Nguon Hong and Justin Whyatt has provided a platform for both countries to reinforce their good relations and pledge to cooperate further in the future. As they prepare for the upcoming events, both sides can explore new areas of cooperation, such as education, tourism, and climate change. This meeting sends a positive signal that Cambodia and Australia will continue to work together in the years to come.
