Cambodia and Cuba have pledged to fortify their relationship and extend their collaborative efforts in various sectors. In a meeting held on June 10, 2024, Cambodian Foreign Minister Sok Chenda Sophea and the newly appointed Cuban Ambassador to Cambodia, Milena Caridad Zaldivar, discussed initiatives to enhance their partnership through determined execution of existing agreements between the two countries.

During the ambassador’s courtesy visit, both representatives acknowledged the intention to diversify and increase collaborative pursuits, identifying potential sectors such as agro-business, rice production, and investment as new horizons for joint endeavors.

Expressing contentment with the current status of Cambodian-Cuban collaboration, the Cambodian Foreign Minister assured Ambassador Zaldivar of full support during her tenure. He communicated the nation’s appreciation for Cuba’s significant support in the 1980s, during a pivotal period for Cambodia.

Ambassador Zaldivar reflected on the longstanding camaraderie binding the two countries, a connection solidified over decades and through the support between past and present leaders of both nations. She praised Cambodia for its commendable progress and economic prosperity under the existing leadership and reiterated Cuba’s eagerness to engage more deeply with Cambodia. Emphasis was placed on reinforcing partnerships in key sectors, including agriculture, sports, health, and educational exchanges.

The commitment to actualize the signed bilateral memoranda of understanding and agreements was echoed by both parties. They agreed to seek avenues that would extend their cooperation into new areas. The durable bond shared between Cambodia and Cuba traces back to the 1960s, established during the era of Cambodia’s Late King-Father Norodom Sihanouk and Cuban leader Fidel Castro. This relationship has blossomed into a comprehensive connection across various facets.

Discussions also ventured into the prospect of fostering trade and commerce through events like trade fairs hosted reciprocally. The Third Political Consultations, scheduled to take place in Havana later in the month, were highlighted as an opportunity not just to discuss the solidification of existing agreements but also to delve into novel areas for prospective collaboration.

Additionally, both nations revisited their roles within ASEAN and the UN, as well as other global forums. They reaffirmed their history of mutual support and the continued commitment to this tradition, strengthening their relationship on the international stage. The dialogue between Cambodia and Cuba marked a conscious effort to pursue a strategic partnership bolstered by shared goals and mutual respect.
