Cambodia and India Forge Stronger Economic Ties through Trade and Investment Initiatives

by Surya Narayan

The Cambodia Oknha Association (COA) and the Embassy of India in Cambodia have recently engaged in productive discussions aimed at bolstering trade and investment links between the two nations. These deliberations took place at the Indian Embassy in Phnom Penh, with COA Secretary General Hun Lak and Indian Ambassador Devyani Khobragade leading the discussions.

The focal point of the meeting was the development of a strategic plan to enhance trade and investment exchanges between the Cambodian and Indian private sectors, with the goal of elevating the economic relationship between Cambodia and India. The participants explored various avenues to deepen these ties, emphasizing the need for a robust plan of action.

A significant outcome of the talks was the agreement to establish a streamlined communication channel. This channel would link the COA Secretariat with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and the recently formed India-Cambodia Joint Business Council. The intention behind this mechanism is to facilitate the seamless exchange and dissemination of crucial business information, thereby aiding trade and investment endeavors between Cambodia and India.

Additionally, the discussions pinpointed specific sectors where both parties see potential for investment and collaborative ventures, highlighting the mutual interest in broadening the scope of their economic partnership.

This meeting follows the recent establishment of the India-Cambodia Joint Business Council, which celebrated its inaugural meeting on February 23 in New Delhi, India. This council represents a significant step forward in formalizing the cooperative efforts between the two countries in the realms of business and commerce.

Recent data from the General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE) illustrates the positive trajectory of Cambodia-India trade relations, with bilateral trade nearing $485 million in 2023. This marks a commendable 10 percent increase from the previous year, indicating thriving commercial exchanges.

Furthermore, tourism ties between the nations have also witnessed remarkable growth. According to the Ministry of Tourism, the number of Indian visitors to Cambodia surged to 68,836 last year, more than doubling from the 34,016 recorded the year before, showcasing the strengthening cultural and economic bonds between Cambodia and India.
