Cambodia and the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province from South Korea have agreed to deepen and broaden their collaborative efforts, particularly in tourism and various promising fields.

On June 12, 2024, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet welcomed a visit from Oh Young-hun, the Governor of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, at the Peace Palace. During this cordial meeting, Oh Young-hun extended his gratitude towards Cambodian leadership for the opportunity to engage. He elaborated on the pivotal intentions behind their visit to the Kingdom of Cambodia, chiefly to finalize a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that would link the administration of Phnom Penh with that of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province.

In this opportunity, the Governor of Jeju also expressed his appreciation to the Prime Minister for his support in previously signing MoUs with Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Moreover, he discussed with the Ministry of Tourism the feasibility of establishing direct air travel from Jeju to Cambodia, signaling a commitment to ease and advance travel between these destinations.

Another distinct point of their discussion was Oh Young-hun’s indication towards seeking investment avenues beyond tourism. This includes exploring possibilities in trade, agriculture, education, and renewable energy, all of which align with the evolving strategic partnership between South Korea and Cambodia.

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, on his part, expressed his satisfaction with this visit and lauded the achievement represented by the new MoU between Phnom Penh and the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province. He noted that these agreements are instrumental in fostering the mutual relationship and cooperation between the two nations.

Recalling a previous meeting during his official visit to South Korea, the Prime Minister emphasized the importance of strengthening connectivity between Jeju and Cambodia. The aim is to catalyze tourism growth and streamline the establishment of direct flight connections to Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, enriching travel experiences and cultural exchanges between the countries.

Samdech Thipadei concluded by encouraging further collaboration between Jeju Province and Cambodian ministries and institutions. He advocated for expanding investments into sectors that demonstrate potential for growth and mutual benefit, underscoring a commitment to fruitful and sustainable partnerships.
