Cambodia and Laos have unveiled plans to enhance cross-border trade, tourism, transportation, and people-to-people connectivity through the development of new infrastructure.
During a recent bilateral meeting in Cambodia, Hun Manet, Prime Minister of Cambodia, and Sonexay Siphandone, Prime Minister of Lao PDR, discussed the proposal to establish a new border checkpoint. This initiative, aimed at strengthening ties between the two nations, was revealed in a statement from Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation following Sonexay Siphandone’s two-day official visit on December 5.
The proposed border checkpoint is planned for the area between Rattanakiri province in Cambodia and Attapeu province in Laos. Both leaders expressed their commitment to directing relevant authorities in their respective countries to expedite the feasibility studies required for the project.
In addition to the checkpoint, the Prime Ministers also encouraged swift action on selecting a site for a new bridge spanning the Tonle Ropou in Cambodia’s Preah Vihear province and the Selampao River in Laos’ Champasak province. This bridge is envisioned as a key connector, fostering transportation, trade, tourism, and investment, while enhancing people-to-people ties in the Greater Mekong Subregion.
Cambodia and Laos share a 540-kilometer-long border, and these projects symbolize a mutual commitment to strengthening economic and social integration between the two neighbors.
