During a strategic visit to the Republic of Korea from May 15 to 18, 2024, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet made significant diplomatic strides, emphasizing the robust investment potential of Cambodia within the ASEAN region. This visit has effectively marked Cambodia as a prime destination for South Korean investors, looking to capitalize on Cambodia’s burgeoning economic and infrastructural development.

Delegate Minister Jean François Tan, in a detailed press briefing on May 18, highlighted the outcomes of this significant diplomatic engagement. Stressing the strong historical investment ties between South Korea and Cambodia, Tan elaborated on the fresh wave of interest from South Korean small and medium enterprises particularly in advanced technology sectors, underlining Cambodia’s economic resilience and growth potential.

Cambodia, geared for an explosive economic growth with predictions estimating a surge surpassing 6% in 2024, proudly stands at the forefront of ASEAN economies. This growth is backed by a combination of factors; a committed and energetic workforce, political stability ensuring a secure investment climate, substantial improvements in infrastructure – including new international airports and expressways – and advantageous trade policies through strategic free trade agreements, notably with South Korea and under the RCEP.

The visit also underscored a comprehensive dialogue between Prime Minister Hun Manet and South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, covering a wide range of mutual interests from economic collaboration to infrastructure development and security. A landmark achievement of this diplomatic venture was the mutual aspiration to elevate their bilateral relations to a “strategic partnership,” aiming for a tighter and mutually prosperous relationship.

Minister Tan remarked on the visit’s deep economic implications, highlighting it as a pivotal moment in Cambodia-South Korea relations. The engagements during the visit aimed at putting Cambodia in the spotlight as a lucrative option for investment and collaboration, paving the way for economic development and cooperative endeavors between the two nations.

Both countries expressed a readiness to explore and harness opportunities for shared benefits, signaling a promising future for economic cooperation. The strategic visit by Prime Minister Hun Manet thus establishes a foundation for enhanced economic ties and a prosperous pathway for future engagements between Cambodia and South Korea.
