On Friday, July 19, Cambodia marked a significant milestone by inaugurating the “Xi Jinping Boulevard”, represented by Sun Chanthol, the First Vice President of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), on behalf of Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet. The event also saw the presence of Peng Ponea, the Minister of Public Works and Transport.

The ceremonial renaming of the Third Ring Road to “Xi Jinping Boulevard” took place under the guidance of Hun Manet and in the presence of Wang Wentian, the former Chinese Ambassador to Cambodia, on May 28, 2024, at the Peace Palace.

This move underscores the depth of the friendship and cooperation between Cambodia and China, honoring Chinese President Xi Jinping. The decision to name the boulevard after him reflects the profound respect and appreciation the Cambodian government and its citizens have for the substantial support from China towards Cambodia’s socio-economic development, including efforts in maintaining peace, fostering economic growth, and improving the living conditions of the Cambodian people.

Described by Peng Ponea during the inauguration, Xi Jinping Boulevard extends for 47.10 kilometers, traversing through Phnom Penh and Kandal Province. It connects National Road No. 1 with National Road No. 4, effectively integrating it within the main provincial and national roads network of the region. Additionally, the boulevard links to major highways, including ASEAN Highways 1 and 11, as well as to pivotal expressways leading to Sihanoukville and Bavet.

The establishment of Xi Jinping Boulevard has been pivotal for the development of the surrounding areas. By providing a primary route that bypasses central Phnom Penh, it alleviates traffic congestion, facilitates smoother transport of goods, and enhances connectivity. Moreover, the boulevard’s presence has spurred development along its length, leading to the emergence of logistics hubs, industrial and factory zones, warehouse spaces, and residential developments. The transformation alongside the boulevard is generating bustling business activities and promises continued growth and development in the future.
