Phnom Penh — Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet yesterday officially inaugurated the Techo International Airport (TIA), describing it as a new milestone in the Kingdom’s development and a symbol of Cambodia’s growing economic and tourism potential.
Speaking at the grand opening ceremony on October 20, Hun Manet said the airport would play a crucial role in strengthening the country’s connectivity, boosting foreign investment, and enhancing Cambodia’s position as a regional transport hub.
He highlighted that the Techo International Airport project stemmed from the visionary leadership of former Prime Minister Hun Sen — the founder of the win-win policy and father of peace — whose long-term vision made the project possible.
“The Techo International Airport marks another chapter in Cambodia’s journey of progress under peace and stability. It is not only an aviation hub but a strategic driver for tourism, logistics, and investment,” Hun Manet said.
He noted that strengthening air connectivity aligns with the Royal Government’s Pentagonal Strategy for the seventh mandate, particularly under its first phase priority areas — People, Roads, Water, Electricity, and Technology — and its second phase, which focuses on improving transportation and logistics efficiency.
“Air transport is a vital link for tourism, trade, investment, and business,” Hun Manet said. “With its enhanced capacity to handle both regional and long-haul international flights, Techo International Airport will help Cambodia attract even more tourists and investors than before the Covid-19 pandemic.”
According to the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), the newly inaugurated TIA reflects Cambodia’s advancement “under the umbrella of peace” and will serve as a cornerstone for the country’s aviation, tourism, and logistics sectors.
Construction of TIA began on January 7, 2020, at the height of the global pandemic. The project, developed in three phases, represents a total investment of USD 2.3 billion and spans 2,600 hectares across Kandal Steung district (Kandal province) and Bati district (Takeo province), about 26 kilometers from Phnom Penh.
- Phase 1 (2025–2030): Capacity for 13 million passengers annually
- Phase 2 (2030–2050): Capacity for 30 million passengers
- Phase 3 (2050 onward): Capacity for 50 million passengers per year
The 4F-level international airport meets all global aviation standards and can accommodate the world’s largest aircraft.
Since its soft opening on September 9, TIA has handled an average of 150,000 passengers and 130 flights per day, with 29 airlines — 25 international and 4 domestic — already operating at the new facility.
In a statement, the SSCA described Techo International Airport as “a newly rising star connecting Cambodia to the world,” adding that it will be a strong foundation for the Kingdom’s long-term economic growth.
“With Techo International Airport, Cambodia is entering a new era of connectivity, opportunity, and prosperity,” the statement concluded.
