The first cooperation initiative under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between Cambodia and Japan was launched on January 22, with Japan’s embassy presenting 29 medical incinerators to Cambodia’s Ministry of Health.
These advanced incinerators, designed to manage infectious and medical waste, will be distributed across hospitals in 10 provinces, including Banteay Meanchey, Battambang, Kampong Chhnang, Kampong Cham, Kampot, Kandal, Kratie, Prey Veng, Siem Reap, and Svay Rieng.
The handover ceremony was presided over by Japanese Ambassador Ueno Atsushi and Cambodia’s Minister of Health, Chheang Ra. The donation is part of the “Project for the Improvement of Infectious Waste Management,” funded by Japan with a grant totaling 436 million Japanese Yen (over $2.7 million). This agreement was originally signed in November 2022 by then-Prime Minister Hun Sen and former Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio in Phnom Penh.
Ambassador Ueno expressed his satisfaction with the project’s progress, highlighting its significance in addressing challenges posed by infectious waste, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic. He emphasized that these incinerators would play a critical role in ensuring safer healthcare delivery and preparing Cambodia for future public health emergencies.
“I hope the 29 incinerators in the 29 hospitals will contribute to safe healthcare provision and build public trust in local healthcare facilities,” Ueno stated. He further stressed the importance of proper use and maintenance of the equipment for long-term benefits.
Minister Chheang Ra commended the donation, noting that it would significantly reduce the spread of infectious diseases, enhance treatment outcomes, and shorten hospital stays for patients. He also underscored the donation as a symbol of the growing partnership between Cambodia and Japan.
The Japanese ambassador reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting Cambodia’s healthcare development, particularly in expanding medical services in provincial areas.
The donated incinerators are designed to dispose of infectious waste, organic materials, sharp objects, and other medical waste efficiently. Their installation is expected to enhance healthcare delivery in Cambodia’s provinces, addressing a longstanding issue in waste management while contributing to the broader goal of improving public health infrastructure.
This collaboration is another milestone in the strengthening of bilateral ties under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, reflecting a shared commitment to the well-being and development of Cambodia’s healthcare system.
