Kampot, Cambodia’s idyllic coastal province, is witnessing a remarkable resurgence in tourism. Though not yet at pre-pandemic levels, the first half of 2024 has been highly encouraging, with over 1.3 million visitors, including 62,000 international tourists—an impressive 30% increase compared to the same period in 2023. With its tranquil charm, enhanced infrastructure, and growing list of attractions, Kampot has become the second most popular countdown destination in Cambodia after Siem Reap.
Revamped Infrastructure: The Foundation of Growth
The Royal Government’s significant investments in Kampot’s infrastructure are paying dividends. Newly paved sidewalks, a rejuvenated riverside promenade, brighter streetlights, and additional security cameras have transformed Kampot into a safer and more inviting city for residents and tourists alike.
The provincial administration’s efforts to beautify the city and create accessible public spaces have not gone unnoticed. Iconic additions like the seahorse statue, a giant clock, and improved riverside areas have added a fresh vibrancy to the downtown area, further boosting domestic tourism.
Diverse and Eclectic Visitors
Kampot’s tourism demographic has evolved significantly. Traditionally a haven for backpackers, the city is now attracting a broader mix of travelers, including couples, families, and “flashpackers” with higher budgets. The growing Cambodian middle class has also contributed to an increase in domestic tourism.
According to Bas Van Der Laan, Founder and Manager of The Old Cinema Hotel, tourists now consider Kampot a standalone destination rather than just a stopover. This shift is reflected in longer average stays, with visitors often extending their trips to explore the region’s diverse offerings, such as National Park hikes, pepper farm tours, and adrenaline-fueled adventures.
Local Tourism Businesses Thriving
Tourism operators in Kampot are experiencing robust growth. Steve Jolly, owner of Karma Traders Kampot, reported a 30% increase in visitor numbers in 2024 compared to 2023. Similarly, Rikitikitavi’s General Manager, Paolo Moscardini, has observed longer stays and year-on-year growth in his hospitality business.
Domestic tourism has played a pivotal role in this growth, thanks to the city’s improved connectivity and an influx of new cafes, restaurants, and attractions. The completion of major road upgrades, such as Highways 3 and 41, has reduced travel time from Phnom Penh to Kampot to just two and a half hours, encouraging more weekend getaways.
Upcoming Attractions and Events
Kampot continues to expand its appeal with upcoming attractions and events. The much-anticipated giant Buddha statue atop Bokor Mountain is expected to become a significant draw for both local and international tourists.
Additionally, the Sea Festival 2024, scheduled from December 13–15, promises to attract large crowds, with Prime Minister Hun Manet and First Lady Pich Chanmony presiding over the opening ceremony. Coinciding with the festival, Cambodia Travel Match 2024 will bring tourism suppliers and international buyers together, further boosting Kampot’s reputation as a must-visit destination.
Regional Trends Favor Kampot
Kampot’s growth has also benefited from regional tourism trends. A decline in Sihanoukville’s popularity has redirected tourist flows to Kampot, while improved logistics connections have placed the province firmly on Cambodia’s countryside tourist trail. The completion of Kampot International Tourist Port will further enhance accessibility, especially for visitors from Phu Quoc, Vietnam, and other regional hubs.
Moreover, Cambodia’s south coast, including revamped areas like Kep and Rabbit Island, has bolstered tourism in the region, positioning Kampot as a central hub for coastal exploration.
Challenges and Opportunities
While Kampot has made impressive strides, some challenges remain. Cambodian visa policies are perceived as less traveler-friendly compared to neighboring countries like Vietnam and Thailand. Flights to Cambodia often involve stopovers, increasing travel time and costs.
Despite these barriers, local operators remain optimistic. Moscardini pointed out that Thailand and Vietnam are becoming more expensive and challenging for visas, prompting some expats to relocate to Cambodia. He likened Kampot’s current buzz to Thailand’s rise as a tourist hotspot 30 years ago.
A Bright Future for Kampot
Kampot’s laid-back atmosphere, diverse attractions, and ongoing improvements in infrastructure and connectivity make it a rising star in Cambodia’s tourism landscape. As Steve Jolly noted, the city offers a slower pace of life, where visitors can explore at their own leisure, away from the hustle and bustle of larger cities.
Looking ahead, a collaborative effort between government authorities, travel agents, and tourism businesses will be key to promoting Kampot as a destination worth staying in, not just passing through. With its wealth of activities and growing reputation, Kampot is well on its way to cementing its place as one of Southeast Asia’s top travel destinations.
