Prime Minister Hun Manet has officially announced the return of the large-scale Angkor Sankranta festival in Siem Reap for Khmer New Year 2025, aiming to attract more tourists and celebrate Cambodia’s cultural heritage. The festival will take place from April 14 to 16, 2025, offering both local and international visitors an immersive experience of Khmer New Year traditions.
Speaking at a graduation ceremony for students of South-East Asia University in Siem Reap, the Prime Minister confirmed the festival’s revival, stating, “This April, we will once again hold the grand Angkor Sankranta in Siem Reap.” He also urged members of the Union of Youth Federations of Cambodia (UYFC) in Siem Reap to actively prepare for the event and promote Cambodia’s tourism potential globally.
Preparations Underway for a Grand Celebration
The announcement follows an inspection visit led by UYFC President Hun Many and Siem Reap Governor Prak Sophoan to key locations around Angkor Wat and the Royal Independence Gardens, assessing sites for festival activities.
As part of the preparations, Siem Reap provincial authorities held a meeting on Sunday with representatives from the hospitality, tourism, and content creation industries. Attendees included hotels, guesthouses, restaurants, massage and spa businesses, tour guide associations, and community-based tourism groups. The discussions focused on strategies to promote the festival, particularly through video marketing and digital outreach.
Highlighting Cambodia’s Cultural Heritage
According to the UYFC, the 2025 Angkor Sankranta festival will feature a diverse lineup of cultural performances, showcasing Cambodia’s vibrant artistic traditions. Visitors can expect traditional games, performances, and exhibitions designed to preserve and promote Cambodia’s intangible cultural heritage.
Deputy Governor Ngov Seng Kak emphasized the importance of maintaining Siem Reap’s appeal as a top tourist destination, highlighting its rich cultural sites, bustling markets, and renowned local craftsmanship. He urged hospitality businesses to maintain reasonable prices during the festival period and encouraged eco-tourism communities to ensure cleanliness and enhance visitor experiences.
Local authorities have also encouraged video content creators to produce promotional materials showcasing Siem Reap’s attractions and the festival’s key events.
A Decade-Long Tradition
First introduced in 2013 by the UYFC, the Angkor Sankranta festival was established to bring young people and the general public together in celebration of Khmer New Year. Over the years, it has evolved into a major cultural event, drawing thousands of visitors with its mix of heritage-focused activities and modern entertainment.
With its grand return in 2025, the Angkor Sankranta festival is set to further reinforce Siem Reap’s position as a premier cultural and tourism destination, inviting the world to experience the beauty and traditions of Cambodia.
