King Norodom Sihamoni has underscored the profound significance of Buddhist pagodas in Khmer society, emphasizing their deep-rooted connection to the daily lives of the people and their essential role in national development.
Speaking at the royal inauguration ceremony of the Grand Residence of Supreme Patriarch Chuon Nath and the Khmer Manuscript Research and Preservation Institute at Wat Ounalom on February 17, the King highlighted the temples’ contributions to Cambodia’s cultural, educational, and spiritual heritage.
He noted that pagodas serve as key centers for promoting Buddhist teachings and have historically played a pivotal role in preserving the Khmer language. In particular, he acknowledged the lifelong dedication of Supreme Patriarch Chuon Nath, whose invaluable work led to the creation of the Khmer dictionary, strengthening the linguistic foundation of the nation.
His Majesty reaffirmed that temples are integral to both daily life and national progress, serving as pillars of religion, culture, and morality. Throughout history, Khmer Buddhist temples have helped cultivate ethical values and social harmony, reinforcing the spiritual and cultural fabric of Cambodian society.
Beyond their religious function, temples have also been centers of education, fostering intellectual and spiritual growth. They have played a crucial role in developing human resources, equipping individuals with knowledge across various disciplines.
“Khmer Buddhist temples are reservoirs of cultural heritage, traditions, and timeless wisdom, providing an invaluable foundation for research and study. They are essential institutions for preserving and passing on national identity and spiritual heritage across generations,” the King stated.
Furthermore, he highlighted the humanitarian role of temples in providing shelter and education for underprivileged individuals, many of whom later emerge as leaders contributing to the nation’s development.
The King also commended Cambodian leaders, including Senate President Hun Sen, for their efforts in revitalizing Buddhism and ensuring the preservation of Khmer temples. Additionally, he acknowledged the policies of the government under Prime Minister Hun Manet, which have contributed to national progress and stability.
Concluding his address, His Majesty reiterated the importance of upholding and respecting Buddhism, emphasizing that no individual should ever seek to undermine its spiritual and cultural significance.
