The Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) in Cambodia has initiated a pivotal project in cooperation with the Cambodian Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training (MLVT) aimed at energizing the nation’s ICT personnel. A ceremonial event held on July 18, 2024, marked the commencement of the “Project for Building Capacity and Establishing an Enabling Environment in ICT Majors of TVET in Cambodia”. This venture is a salute to the progressive collaboration between the two countries.

Presiding over the event were KOICA Cambodia’s Country Director, Moonjung Choi, and the Cambodian Minister of MLVT, Heng Sour. The gathering marked the formal inauguration of the five-year initiative, which spans from 2023 to 2027. Supported by a generous grant of 8 million USD from the Republic of Korea, the project’s inception ceremonies targeted at briefing stakeholders, inclusive of delegates from regional TVET institutions, governmental sectors, and associated non-governmental organizations, about the project’s objectives and strategies for execution. This assembly encouraged dialogue concerning available resources and bolstered support for ICT-centric TVET institutions for the tenure of the project.

The project is designed with a multifaceted approach to fortify Cambodia’s ICT sector. Principal components include restructuring the ICT curriculum to reflect current market needs, boosting the capacity of policymakers, master trainers, and educators through rigorous training, and enhancing training spaces by refurbishing computer laboratories at 20 public TVET institutions with the integration of modern computer and IoT equipment, as well as strengthening support through initiatives like the National TVET Day.

This strategic project is poised to provide a substantial uplift to the digital competencies of the Cambodian youth, working to align their proficiency with the evolving demands of the modern job market. By arming graduates with crucial ICT skills, the endeavor is anticipated not only to empower individual career potential but also to make a solid contribution to the overall economic upliftment of Cambodia.

The fusion of concerted efforts aimed at curriculum enhancement and the creation of an enriched learning environment is a powerful forecast of progress for the country’s ICT workforce. This forward-thinking project cements the foundation for a robust digital economy in Cambodia, setting the stage for a brighter, technology-driven future.
