The Funan Techo Canal Project is undoubtedly a major stride forward for Cambodia, as Prime Minister Hun Manet proclaimed during the groundbreaking ceremony held on August 5. This endeavor is more than just an infrastructure development; it represents a unified venture aimed at elevating the nation’s status and utility.
Prime Minister Hun Manet addressed concerns about territorial sovereignty at the event, asserting that the project would not infringe upon or compromise the kingdom’s land. Instead, the initiative stands to offer substantial national benefits, reinforcing the country’s economic capabilities and the trust among the citizens. He stressed the importance of clear communication in dispelling doubts surrounding this project, emphasizing the impact it would have on solidifying Cambodia’s sovereignty and economic prospects.
Clarifying misconceptions, Samdech Thipadei pointed out that the project is routed entirely within Cambodian borders, which have been unequivocally demarcated and are already populated by millions. The canal is a product of the Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) model, negating reliance on foreign loans, and is financed through private investments. Interestingly, a considerable 51% stake in the project is held by a local Cambodian company.
The Funan Techo Canal, spanning about 180 kilometers, will facilitate the linkage between the country’s rivers and the sea, passing through Kandal, Takeo, Kampot, and Kep provinces. The estimated cost stands at around USD 1.7 billion and has undergone exhaustive studies to ensure its feasibility and value.
The Prime Minister stressed that the significance of this project far exceeds its cost, be it USD 1.7 billion or more. The true measure of its worth is in the national sentiment it has sparked, unlike any other infrastructure project such as bridges, highways, or airports previously undertaken since the post-liberation period of 1979. This project has garnered bipartisan support and has ignited a spirit of nationalism that is unprecedented, transcending political divides.
Despite a few persistent ambiguities, the project has received resounding support from Cambodian citizens from all walks of life, both domestically and internationally. This national effort has been met with public enthusiasm, with celebrations and ceremonial events across the country, ringing in a new chapter of development and unity for Cambodia.
