In a recent accolade, Phnom Penh, the vibrant capital city of Cambodia, has secured the ninth spot on TripAdvisor’s list of the top 25 most popular tourist destinations worldwide for the year 2024. This recognition by the renowned US-based online travel agency has ignited excitement within the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism, which sees it as a potential catalyst for attracting a surge of international tourists to the country.
TripAdvisor conducted a comprehensive survey on January 9, inviting tourists to vote for their favorite destinations based on their experiences over the past 12 months. The results unveiled an impressive showing by Southeast Asian countries, with five of them making it to the list of the world’s most sought-after tourist destinations. Alongside Phnom Penh, Vietnam’s scenic Sapa City claimed the fifth position, Thailand’s enchanting Pattaya ranked seventh, Malaysia’s bustling Kuala Lumpur secured the tenth spot, and Indonesia’s Bandung clinched the fifteenth position.
One of the standout features highlighted by TripAdvisor was Phnom Penh’s affordability for travelers. Visitors can relish reasonably priced hotel accommodations and delectable meals at local restaurants, making it an attractive destination for budget-conscious tourists. Additionally, the capital city boasts a plethora of cultural and historical attractions, offering a rich tapestry of experiences for travelers to explore.
Top Sopheak, spokesperson for the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism, expressed his delight on January 10 regarding the consistent recognition of various Cambodian travel destinations by TripAdvisor. He noted that Siem Reap, in particular, had garnered praise for its exceptionally welcoming local population, earning it the distinction of having the “most friendly” populace towards tourists.
Sopheak emphasized that receiving recognition from TripAdvisor multiple times holds significant value in promoting Cambodia’s vast tourism potential and serves as a compelling magnet for international visitors. He further underscored that Phnom Penh’s acknowledgment as a destination characterized by its culture, history, culinary delights, and affordable lodging options contributes significantly to showcasing Cambodia’s allure on the global stage, benefitting not only the capital but the entire nation.
According to Sopheak, Cambodia witnessed the arrival of approximately 5 million international tourists in 2023, marking a remarkable growth of about 139.5% compared to the preceding year, 2022. He also revealed that Phnom Penh alone welcomed over 1 million international tourists in 2023, with the majority hailing from China. This influx was followed by visitors from South Korea, the United States, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Taiwan, France, Japan, and the United Kingdom, highlighting the city’s growing international appeal and its role as a pivotal gateway to Cambodia’s cultural riches and historical treasures.
