Phnom Penh has recently seen the inauguration of two electric vehicle (EV) showrooms by BYD Cambodia and Harmony Auto. These showrooms, located in City Mall and Chip Mong Mall 271, aim to reduce the reliance on fuel-powered vehicles, which are known for their high carbon emissions, while also generating numerous employment opportunities for the local populace.

The opening ceremony, which took place at the BYD City Mall Showroom, was graced by the presence of Kha Leng, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Commerce, and Peou Maly, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, alongside delegates from BYD and Harmony Auto.

During the ceremony, Leng praised the collaborative efforts of the two firms in launching the showrooms, which are poised to meet the growing demand for EVs in the capital. He highlighted the swift progress in the EV sector as indicative of the Royal Government of Cambodia’s commitment to promoting cleaner transportation alternatives and attracting global investors to establish more manufacturing units in the country, including vehicle assembly plants.

Leng also touched upon the longstanding and fruitful relationship between Cambodia and China, noting the significant increase in trade between the two nations. He encouraged Chinese investors to delve into more investment ventures within the priority sectors, leveraging the attractive incentives and support offered by the Cambodian government.

Maly lauded the expansion of the companies’ brands and facilities within Cambodia, aligning with the government’s vision to transition from fuel-powered to electric vehicles by 2050 to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions.

He expressed hope that the endeavors of Harmony Auto and BYD Cambodia would eventually lead to the establishment of a car manufacturing and assembly plant in Cambodia to cater to the growing demand and foster job creation for locals.

Hank Li, Sales Manager at Newa Insurance (Cambodia) Plc, revealed to Khmer Times the strategic plans of BYD Cambodia to establish more showrooms across the nation, bolstering their position as a leading car sales company globally.

Chhean Leang, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Information, underscored the government’s future goals to curtail carbon and harmful gas emissions. He emphasized the economic advantages of EVs, including cost savings on fuel, which could significantly improve family finances. Leang envisioned a future where Cambodians would increasingly opt for EVs, attracted by their silent operation and the comfort they offer during travel. Furthermore, he noted the affordability and accessibility of EV replacement parts, attributed to government incentives aimed at encouraging EV investment.
