Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet has recently provided a comprehensive seven-point plan aimed at enhancing the practices within the realm of Cambodian religious institutions, particularly focusing on Buddhism. The Prime Minister delineated these points at a meeting attended by Buddhist clergy members at the National Institute of Education on Thursday, August 15.
The Prime Minister’s first recommendation involves the Ministry of Cults and Religions continuing its organization of educational courses for Buddhist clergy. These courses are designed to address the roles, responsibilities, and moral expectations of religious leaders, ensuring they meet the evolving needs of the citizens.
Prime Minister Hun Manet also advises that Buddhist clergy work to build stronger relationships with practitioners and local authorities, maintaining a code of ethical conduct that aids in thwarting the misuse of religion and fostering inclusive community support. Clergy are encouraged to preserve Khmer cultural traditions and engage actively in social education to help prevent drug abuse, domestic violence, human trafficking, and gang-related issues.
Further, the Prime Minister suggests clergy members to constantly exhibit good relations with monks, adhering to the principle of being supportive aides, thereby avoiding any conflicts that can tarnish the sanctity of the monastic community and national Buddhist reputation.
The fourth point highlights the necessity for clergymen to uphold their integrity by steering clear of any activities that could bring into question their impartiality, be it through political affiliation or discrimination of any sort.
Prime Minister Hun Manet then focuses on the need for the Ministry of Cults and Religions to modernize its instructional materials, ensuring that there is consistency in the practice of religious ceremonies, which includes both religious rituals and weddings. He emphasizes the importance of collaborating with all parties involved, to provide proper training and guidance.
The sixth recommendation seeks to rejuvenate the Khmer Wise Association, thus ensuring a continuing development of a knowledgeable society contributing to the preservation of not only Buddhism but also the nation’s cultural legacy.
Completing the seven-point plan, Prime Minister Hun Manet calls upon the religious community to uphold the principles of the dharma and societal morals. He encourages active participation from women in social activities and education aimed at steering communities away from negative behaviors.
