In a strategic move aimed at expanding air travel connectivity in Southeast Asia, Really Cool Airlines from Thailand and AirAsia Cambodia are set to introduce new flight routes through Macau International Airport (MIA). This development is anticipated to enhance the regional air travel network significantly.
The management of MIA recently disclosed that Really Cool Airlines will commence flight operations connecting Thailand with Macau. Concurrently, AirAsia Cambodia has announced its decision to begin a direct flight service linking Phnom Penh with Macau. This initiative marks a significant milestone in enhancing the accessibility and travel options for passengers within and beyond the region.
Really Cool Airlines, established in March 2023, is on the verge of obtaining its air operator certification from Thai aviation authorities by the first quarter of 2024. Following this, the airline plans to kick-start its flight services in the subsequent quarter, setting a new precedent in the regional aviation sector.
Furthermore, an MIA delegation actively participated in the Route Development Forum for Asia, which took place from February 27th to 29th, 2024, in Malaysia. This event served as a pivotal platform for establishing valuable connections and exploring collaborative ventures aimed at expanding the airport’s route network.
As of February 2024, MIA was facilitating 213 weekly round-trip flights to 18 cities across Southeast Asia and Northeast Asia. The airport’s management highlighted a gradual recovery in airline operations, reaching approximately 40% of the levels observed prior to the global pandemic. Additionally, passenger traffic at the airport surpassed the 600,000 mark for the first time since the onset of the pandemic, signaling a positive trajectory in air travel demand.
In related developments, airlines from Nepal and Sri Lanka have shown keen interest in the Macau market, with plans to introduce charter flights to and from MIA by the fourth quarter of 2024. Turkish Airlines, known for its previous discussions about establishing routes between Europe and Macau, reiterated its interest in the Macau market and expressed a readiness to collaborate with other carriers to further develop this promising market segment.
