The Mekong River is one of the most important natural resources in the region, providing livelihoods and sustenance to millions of people. However, in recent years, the river has faced a number of challenges that threaten its sustainability and the well-being of those who depend on it. In response, Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen has called for urgent action to be taken by Mekong River Commission (MRC) countries to address these challenges and prevent further damage to the river and its ecosystem.

At the Fourth Summit of the MRC, held in Vientiane, Laos, Prime Minister Samdech Hun Sen stressed the need for enhanced cooperation and collective efforts among the Mekong countries to ensure the sustainable development and growth of the Mekong River Basin. He highlighted the importance of the river as a supporting source for the well-being of the people and sustainable development in the region. He also emphasized the need to pay attention to the river’s water sustainability, which has become a major concern due to the increased water demand resulting from the development in the region.

The Prime Minister also pointed out that climate change has adversely affected the Mekong River, and called on the Mekong countries to take action on time. He warned that the biodiversity in the Mekong basin will be gone in the future if the region excessively relies on utilizing the Mekong’s biodiversity and its resources.

The CEO of the MRC Secretariat, Anoulak Kittikhoun, also stressed the growing challenges facing the Mekong River as it undergoes tremendous transformations, and noted that measures are being taken to address problems that arise. However, more needs to be done to prevent further damage to the river and its ecosystem.

At the summit, the Heads of Government of MRC Member Countries adopted the Vientiane Declaration of the 4th MRC Summit, which recognizes the opportunities the Mekong has offered for socio-economic development and growth, and asserts that sustainable water security is a key supporting foundation. The declaration also acknowledges the potential transboundary impacts of developments in the region, including impacts from emerging climate change.

The Heads of Government called on the MRC and all Partners to find innovative solutions to cope with emerging challenges and to intensify cooperation for a water secure and sustainable Mekong River Basin. They also reiterated their commitment to joint efforts to further strengthen the role of the MRC in helping to ensure a water, food, and energy secure and economically, socially, and environmentally sustainable Mekong River Basin.

The importance of the Mekong River cannot be overstated, and it is vital that the Mekong countries work together to address the challenges facing the river and its ecosystem. By taking collective action and finding innovative solutions, the MRC countries can ensure a sustainable and prosperous future for the Mekong River Basin, benefiting all countries along its course and all the people living in the entire basin.
