In a recent meeting that took place in Seoul, South Korea, Cambodian Senate President Samdech Techo Hun Sen underscored the importance of cultural exchanges and fortified relations between Cambodians and South Koreans. This conversation, held with Jeong Samuel, President of the Korean Culture Association (KCA), highlighted a collective effort to deepen the understanding and appreciation of each nation’s culture—especially among Khmer-South Korean families. This initiative is seen as a vital step in promoting tourism and fostering a rich, cultural dialogue between the two countries.

The interaction took place during a courtesy call by Jeong Samuel on September 10, where discussions spanned the mutual benefits of cultural cooperation and the proposed initiatives to bring these ideas to fruition. Notably, Jeong Samuel expressed his respect for Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s leadership in steering Cambodia towards peace and development. He also gave insight into the association’s role in enhancing cultural ties between Cambodia and South Korea through various planned activities.

Among the initiatives discussed, Jeong Samuel detailed plans for facilitating cultural programs aimed at enriching the mutual understanding of Cambodian and Korean cultures. This includes efforts to collaborate with the Cambodian ambassador to South Korea in organizing cultural exchange programs. Additionally, he shared insights into past and future events designed to showcase Cambodian culture in South Korea. This includes a previous exhibit of 2,000 photographs highlighting Cambodian culture and temples, a forthcoming fundraising event to support the Samdech Techo Voluntary Youth Doctor Association (TYDA), and a plan to organize a painting exhibition in Siem Reap in December 2024 to further promote cultural exchange.

These initiatives are aimed not only at celebrating and sharing the rich cultural tapestry of both nations but also at creating lasting bonds between the people of Cambodia and South Korea—particularly among families with bicultural backgrounds. Samdech Techo Hun Sen specifically pointed out the significance of nurturing relationships among the estimated 8,000 Cambodian women married to Korean men and their 10,000 children, emphasizing the role these families play in bridging cultural divides and encouraging tourism through their unique positions and experiences.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen voiced strong support for these efforts, highlighting how cultural and people-to-people exchanges act as foundational pillars for not only enhancing bilateral relations but also boosting tourism and understanding between Cambodia and South Korea. He urged the Korean Cultural Association, alongside the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Government of South Korea, to invest in programs that bring Khmer-Korean families closer, thereby enriching the cultural fabric shared by the two nations.

This meeting between Samdech Techo Hun Sen and Jeong Samuel represents a significant step forward in fostering closer ties between Cambodia and South Korea through cultural exchange. By leveraging the diverse and rich heritage of both countries and focusing on the familial bonds that already exist, there is a clear pathway toward a more interconnected and mutually beneficial relationship. This approach not only acknowledges the importance of cultural understanding at a grassroots level but also showcases a deep commitment to strengthening ties on a broader scale, highlighting the pivotal role of cultural diplomacy in today’s global landscape.
