(Phnom Penh) – Cambodia’s Techo International Airport, a landmark infrastructure project set to transform the country’s aviation landscape, will commence operations on 9 September 2025, with its official inauguration scheduled for 20 October 2025. The announcement was made on Friday (May 23) by the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA) following formal approval by Prime Minister Hun Manet.
According to the SSCA, the Royal Government of Cambodia has officially endorsed the operational timeline, confirming that the soft launch of the airport will take place in early September. The inauguration ceremony will be held in October and presided over by Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, marking the full-scale commencement of what is set to be the largest airport in the country.
Techo International Airport is being constructed across a vast 2,600-hectare site and has been classified as a 4F-class international airport, meaning it can accommodate some of the world’s largest commercial aircraft, including the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747. Once operational, the first phase of the airport is expected to handle up to 13 million passengers annually, significantly enhancing Cambodia’s connectivity and positioning it as a regional hub for international travel.
With an estimated investment of USD 1.5 billion, the project is being delivered through a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The State Secretariat of Civil Aviation retains a 10 percent share in the total investment, underlining the government’s active participation in shaping the Kingdom’s aviation future.
The development of Techo International Airport represents a major milestone in Cambodia’s infrastructure and economic growth strategy, aimed at supporting the country’s increasing tourism, business travel, and cargo demand. Its strategic location and advanced design are expected to significantly boost regional integration and economic activity upon completion.
The airport’s phased launch plan ensures a smooth transition from Phnom Penh International Airport while allowing operational readiness and safety protocols to be fully tested. Industry stakeholders have welcomed the announcement, citing it as a sign of Cambodia’s growing commitment to modern infrastructure and international standards.
Further details on flight transitions, operational logistics, and passenger services are expected to be released by SSCA in the coming months.
