Siem Reap, Cambodia’s historical and cultural gem, has embarked on an ambitious journey to transform itself into a smart city. This visionary move has garnered accolades from economists who believe it will revolutionise the lives of both residents and tourists.
The recent 4th Joint Coordinating Committee Meeting held in Siem Reap highlighted the city’s commitment to implementing cutting-edge technological and digital solutions. Experts and officials expressed their optimism about the significant increase in tourist numbers that could be expected if the smart city initiative proves successful.
Economist Hong Vannak, from the Institute of International Relations at the Royal Academy of Cambodia, commended the government’s allocation of funds for infrastructure development in the province. He emphasised that a successful smart city initiative would make Siem Reap even more attractive to tourists. The province’s rich culture, ancient civilization, temples, and entertainment venues would be further enhanced, creating a captivating experience for visitors.
Beyond the positive impact on tourism, Vannak stressed the importance of paying attention to environmental concerns, infrastructure improvements, waste management systems, and the establishment of eco-tourism and agro-tourism sites. These efforts would contribute to the overall sustainable development and tourism experience in Siem Reap.
Deputy Governor Yun Linne also shared a similar perspective during the meeting, acknowledging the challenges faced in integrating the province into the ASEAN Smart City Network. He emphasized the need for capacity building and digital literacy among officials to successfully implement the concept of a smart city. This will require capable human resources familiar with digital technologies, aligning Siem Reap with the increasing global trend towards smart cities.
Siem Reap’s inclusion as one of the three towns from Cambodia in the ASEAN Smart City Network reflects the city’s commitment to collaboration and cooperation in building smart and sustainable urban environments. The platform, established in 2018, aims to harmonize smart city development efforts across the region by fostering partnerships with the private sector and securing support and funding from external ASEAN partners.
As Siem Reap makes strides towards becoming a smart city, locals and visitors can look forward to a transformed experience. The convergence of technology, culture, and sustainability promises to create a modern yet harmonious destination that showcases Cambodia’s rich heritage to the world. With the right investments and dedication from all stakeholders, Siem Reap’s smart city vision is set to propel the city towards a brighter future.
