The new international airport in Phnom Penh, named Techo International Airport, is inching closer towards completion as the construction process has reached 55% completion as of November, according to the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA). The airport, which is a joint venture between the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Overseas Cambodia Investment Corporation (OCIC), is expected to be fully completed by the end of 2024 and start its operations in the first half of 2025 with an estimated cost of approximately $800 million only for the first stage. Once operational, the new airport will replace the current Phnom Penh International Airport, showing how Cambodia is preparing to attract more tourism and business opportunities.

The Kingdom of Cambodia has also experienced a steady recovery in its aviation industry. According to the SSCA, Cambodia’s international airports have witnessed an impressive surge of 144% in the amount of air passengers in the January-October period of 2023 as compared to the same period of last year, which is a good indication of rapid growth. In addition, record-breaking statistics reveal that the country recorded a total of 41,596 flights at international airports during the first ten months of 2023, witnessing a significant increase of 93% compared to the same period last year. This remarkable growth in the Cambodian aviation industry indicates that the country is making progress in terms of economic growth and creating opportunities for various industries.

This new international airport will also create a plethora of job opportunities both in the construction and operational phases, which is a significant boost to the economy. Moreover, the new airport will facilitate trade and transportation, making it an important logistic hub in the region. This airport will have advanced technology and infrastructure to ensure the safe arrival and departure of passengers, in line with international safety standards, as well as attracting more airlines to fly to Cambodia. The opening of Techo International Airport in 2025 will put Cambodia’s aviation industry on the map and make it more accessible for business and tourism.

In conclusion, the construction of Techo International Airport is progressing well, and it is on track to become one of the key drivers of growth for the Cambodian economy. With an estimated cost of approximately $800 million, this airport will not only create job opportunities and boost tourism and business opportunities but will also connect the Kingdom to other parts of the world. The airport’s infrastructural facilities and advanced technology make it a key logistic hub in the region. It is expected that the Techo International Airport will also attract more airlines to fly to Cambodia, contributing to its socio-economic development for years to come.
