A major water infrastructure initiative in Battambang province is set to significantly expand access to safe drinking water for residents. The newly completed Battambang Water Treatment Plant, with a production capacity of 55,000 cubic metres per day, will provide clean water to around 7,000 additional households, increasing coverage and supporting urban development in the region.
The expansion is part of Cambodia’s ongoing efforts to improve water and sanitation services in provincial centres and respond to rising demand. The plant’s enhanced capacity aims to strengthen the reliability and reach of the municipal water system, particularly in urban areas that previously relied on alternative sources or limited distribution networks.
Financed through a partnership involving the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and other development partners, the facility upgrades Battambang’s existing water supply infrastructure. Officials noted that the improved capacity would help meet both household needs and future urban growth requirements, as access to clean water is essential for public health, hygiene, and economic activity.
With the expanded water network, many families in Battambang will now receive piped water directly to their homes, a major shift from earlier reliance on trucked water deliveries or other intermittent sources. Stakeholders highlighted that the new system is expected to bolster the city’s sanitation standards and reduce waterborne health risks by ensuring a safer and more consistent supply.
The project aligns with national goals to increase water access in urban and peri-urban communities. Improving clean water availability remains a priority for Cambodia’s development strategy, as it supports sustainable urbanisation and enhances residents’ quality of life. The expanded facility also positions Battambang to better support local businesses and services that depend on reliable water resources.
Officials involved in the project emphasised that the Battambang water facility upgrade represents a significant step toward meeting long-term service goals. As the area’s population grows, such investments are expected to play a vital role in ensuring clean water access extends to more households, strengthens community resilience, and contributes to regional development objectives.
