Phnom Penh – In a significant move to enhance the quality and competitiveness of Cambodian industries, the National Standards Council has approved the adoption of 21 international standards as official Cambodian standards. The decision was made during the Council’s 31st meeting, chaired by H.E. Hem Vanndy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation and Chairman of the Council.
The newly adopted standards are drawn from globally recognized bodies, including the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), and joint ISO/IEC frameworks. They cover a wide array of sectors vital to Cambodia’s industrial development, such as chemicals, energy management, electrical and electronic products, automotive components, cosmetics, bamboo furniture, and textiles.
“These standards are vital foundations for Cambodia’s progress and the sovereignty of our manufacturing sector, particularly at a time of strong national unity and support movement for local products,” said Minister Hem Vanndy. He emphasized that the application of international standards will enable Cambodian businesses to better integrate into both domestic and global supply chains while also ensuring public health, consumer safety, and enhanced industry competitiveness.
Beyond the approval of the standards, the Council also endorsed the establishment of three new national technical committees. These committees will focus on deepening Cambodia’s engagement with international standardization bodies, including ISO, IEC, and Codex Alimentarius.
This strategic move is part of Cambodia’s broader roadmap to attain full membership in ISO and associate membership in IEC by 2026. It reflects the government’s commitment to aligning national development with global best practices, supporting local industries, and fostering a business environment rooted in quality, safety, and innovation.
With these developments, Cambodia is signaling its readiness to embrace a future defined by international collaboration, robust industrial policies, and a renewed focus on standards-driven economic growth.
