Phnom Penh – In a move to diversify its tourism economy and tap into new global markets, the Kingdom of Cambodia has signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on tourism cooperation with the Federative Republic of Brazil.
The signing took place on the sidelines of the 26th UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) General Assembly in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, marking Cambodia’s first-ever tourism agreement with a South American nation.
The MoU was signed by H.E. Huot Hak, Minister of Tourism of Cambodia, and H.E. Ms. Ana Carla Machado Lopes, Vice Minister of Tourism and UNWTO Executive Secretary of Brazil.
The agreement creates a framework to strengthen bilateral cooperation, promote tourism-related investment, and develop high-value, heritage-based tourism products tailored for the Brazilian market. It also aims to enhance joint marketing initiatives, cultural exchange programmes, and capacity-building efforts between the two countries.
With over 200 million people, Brazil represents a significant potential source market for Cambodia. The Ministry of Tourism said the partnership reflects Cambodia’s commitment to market diversification, reducing reliance on traditional markets while expanding tourism promotion across South America.
Officials described the signing as a milestone that will open a new chapter in Cambodia’s global tourism outreach, encouraging more Brazilian travellers and investors to explore the Kingdom’s cultural, natural, and investment opportunities.
