On June 26, during the celebration of the 17th Cambodian Veterans Day at the National Defence University in Phnom Penh, Prime Minister Hun Manet voiced his commitment to continue supporting the country’s veterans. He highlighted the unity and peace among former soldiers who once opposed each other in the civil conflict, now coexisting in harmony. Hun Manet’s acknowledgment extended to philanthropists and the Cambodian Veterans Association for their contributions towards housing projects, emphasizing the establishment of ‘Peace Villages’ as a significant achievement. These communities symbolize reconciliation by offering former combatants a place to live side by side, fostering a new sense of community and solidarity.

The Prime Minister addressed the substantial policy measures taken by the government, including the construction of houses on veterans’ land, emphasizing the importance of improving their living conditions. With the National Social Security Fund for veterans and additional support through health equity cards, the government ensures that veterans and their families have access to necessary healthcare services. In a significant move aimed at inclusivity, Hun Manet also encouraged the prioritization of veterans’ children in recruitment processes within the Cambodian forces, highlighting the ongoing commitment to honor those who have served the nation.

Hun Manet reassured veterans of the government’s dedication to recognizing their sacrifice and valor by providing ongoing support, which includes vocational training for veterans and their children. The government’s efforts extend to increasing veterans’ pensions and ensuring that additional financial support is consistently adjusted according to the country’s economic growth.

With over 109,000 veterans and 149,000 dependents currently benefiting from monthly social security funds, Hun Manet emphasized the significance of Cambodian Veterans Day. This day serves not just as a reminder of the veterans’ sacrifices but also celebrates the collective efforts to liberate Cambodia from the Khmer Rouge regime. Through these initiatives, the Prime Minister reaffirms the government’s commitment to honoring the legacy and contributions of veterans, ensuring their welfare and integration into society as a tribute to their service.
