“The government’s five priority areas under the leadership of Prime Minister Hun Manet will drive progress and development in Cambodia, ensuring protection, stability, security, and prosperity for all Cambodians. This ambitious vision has been welcomed by many and has the potential to deliver significant benefits to the country and its people.”
In a recent speech after being appointed Cambodia’s Prime Minister, Hun Manet outlined his five priority areas for his government’s focus. These priorities are expected to drive the country’s progress and development over the coming years.
The first priority area is the protection of peace, stability, security, and safety for the well-being of the people. Additionally, the government aims to protect independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity so that they are not infringed on or sabotaged.
The second priority area is ensuring socio-economic development across all sectors by focusing on governance reform. The Prime Minister wants to mould public institutions into ones that are highly capable, strong, smart, and clean. This will ensure that the rule of law, social justice, and the efficiency and quality of public services are strengthened.
The third priority aims to improve people’s livelihoods by providing quality education and vocational training. Workers will enjoy better wages and improved working conditions. The government also plans to offer career protections aimed at developing a more efficient and comprehensive public sector payroll and incentive system based on meritocracy, aligned with the promotion of productivity, performance, and livelihood of public servants, economic growth, and the availability of the national budget.
The fourth priority is ensuring social security and stability in people’s livelihoods now and in the future. The government will develop a social protection system that includes effective and sustainable social assistance and social security systems to protect everyone, especially those from poor households, vulnerable groups, and at-risk households, from crises and emergencies, without leaving anyone unattended.
Finally, the fifth priority aims to focus more attention on sustainable socio-economic development and resilience to climate change by making use of demographic dividends and strengthening Cambodia’s demographic resilience. The Prime Minister also wants to promote gender equality, address climate change, manage natural resources sustainably, increase sustainable financing for green investment, promote climate-resilient and low-carbon public investment, and ensure environmental sustainability by preparing to respond to climate change.
Many Cambodians have proudly welcomed the new government’s policies. The President of the Cambodian Institute for Democracy, Pa Chanroeun, said that the new government has left a legacy for its successors to follow. The CPP’s strong human resources, finances, and structures from the national to the sub-national level, combined with a new generation of capable young blood, are expected to result in successful strategies that address the people’s challenges, improve the national economy, and drive the country’s development.
It is hoped that the government will continue to receive full support from bilateral and multilateral partners, the private sector, and nongovernmental organisations while working towards this goal. The Prime Minister’s vision is ambitious, but with a focus on progress, the government could move the nation significantly forward, delivering benefits to the Cambodian people successfully.
