The International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Cambodia’s Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology & Innovation (MISTI) recently held discussions aimed at transforming the Global Financial Technology (GFT) sector and strengthening linkages with Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The meeting focused on identifying opportunities to support private-sector growth, enhance MSME participation, and improve Cambodia’s competitiveness in the digital financial ecosystem.
Officials from IFC and MISTI explored collaborative frameworks designed to support sustainable development in the GFT sector, including technology adoption, regulatory alignment, and access to finance for smaller businesses. The discussions emphasized the importance of integrating MSMEs into evolving digital and financial value chains, helping to broaden market access and promote inclusive economic growth.
IFC, a member of the World Bank Group, brings expertise in MSME finance and technology-driven transformation. MSMEs are a crucial part of the economy, driving employment, innovation, and inclusive growth. They account for the majority of firms, contribute a significant portion of jobs, and deliver an important share of GDP in many emerging markets, though they continue to face challenges in accessing financing.
The dialogue also highlighted the role of strong policy frameworks in supporting digital transformation and facilitating stronger linkages between GFT platforms and MSME operations. Key enablers identified included improved digital infrastructure, access to credit, and tailored capacity-building initiatives to scale MSME engagement in the GFT ecosystem.
Stakeholders noted the need to accelerate reforms that reduce barriers to credit, enhance technology adoption, and encourage partnership models that open new opportunities for MSMEs. These measures are expected to help Cambodia create a more dynamic business environment that supports innovation, promotes inclusive financial services, and strengthens integration into global markets.
The joint exploration between IFC and MISTI represents a significant step in reinforcing strategic cooperation aimed at transforming Cambodia’s GFT landscape while enabling MSMEs to play a larger role in the country’s economic development.
