On 17 September 2024, the Koh Ker Temples in Cambodia proudly marked their first year since being recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This recognition, received during the 45th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on the same day in 2023, has elevated the site to a status shared by the most treasured cultural landmarks around the globe.
Nestled in Srayang Commune, Kulen District, within the Preah Vihear province and situated roughly 100 kilometres from the well-known city of Siem Reap, the Koh Ker Temples stand as a significant piece of Cambodian history. Serving as the capital of Cambodia during King Jayavarman IV’s reign from 928 to 941 AD, Koh Ker was once the heart of the Khmer empire, showcasing the zenith of the country’s architectural, religious, and artistic achievements in the 10th century.
The decision by UNESCO to list Koh Ker alongside the world’s most important cultural and historical sites is a recognition of its unique value to humanity and its exceptional historical significance.
