The official inauguration of the Cambodia-Japan Water Treatment Plant in Pursat City has significantly enhanced the water production capacity of the Pursat Water Supply Authority. The ceremony, presided over by Minister Hem Vanndy and Ambassador Ueno Atsushi, celebrates the successful collaboration between Cambodia and Japan to meet the increasing demand for clean water in the province.
Attended by over 650 participants, including representatives from relevant ministries and institutions, the Embassy of Japan, JICA, local authorities, and citizens, the ceremony highlights the importance of this joint effort in ensuring access to clean water for the people of Pursat.
Minister Vanndy expressed his gratitude to the government and people of Japan for their unwavering support in Cambodia’s development, particularly in the clean water sector. He noted that this water treatment plant is the third to be funded by Japan and inaugurated in 2023, following the Chreav Water Treatment Plant in Siem Reap Province and the Stung Sen II Water Treatment Plant in Kampong Thom Province. This signifies the strengthening of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Japan, especially as this year marks their 70th anniversary.
In recent years, Pursat province has experienced significant improvements in physical infrastructure and socio-economic development. Alongside these changes, the demand for clean water has steadily increased. The Pursat Water Supply Authority, responsible for providing clean water in the province, has responded to this demand by doubling its production capacity through the inauguration of the new water treatment plant.
With funding of 2,405 million yen (approximately $22.2 million) from the Government of Japan through JICA, the construction of the water treatment plant and administrative building took place over a period of 24 months, from August 2021 to August 2023. The project has enhanced the overall water infrastructure in Pursat.
The new water treatment plant has a production capacity of 6,600 m3/day, making the Pursat Water Supply Authority’s total capacity reach 13,860 m3/day. With a water distribution network spanning 247 km, the authority can now provide quality, safe, sustainable, and affordable clean water to over 15,000 families in Pursat City, as well as parts of Bakan and Kandeang districts.
This achievement not only addresses the immediate water needs of the community but also aligns with Cambodia’s Sustainable Development Goals 2030. The enhanced water production capacity in Pursat City positions the province to attract more investment, contributing to ongoing economic development and improving the well-being of its residents.
