The Ministry of Women’s Affairs of Cambodia (MoWA) and the Indian Embassy have joined hands to implement a transformative project titled “Expanding Traditional Heritage Opportunities for Women: Silk Weaving Training in Kandal Province.” The partnership was formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday at the Ministry office. The agreement was signed by Ing Kantha Phavi, Cambodia’s Minister of Women’s Affairs, and Dr. Devyani Uttam Khobragade, the Ambassador of India to Cambodia.

This collaboration represents a significant step toward empowering Cambodian women and preserving the nation’s rich cultural heritage. The initiative aligns with the shared vision of both nations to promote women’s empowerment, conserve traditional crafts, and foster sustainable economic development within communities.

Transforming Tradition into Opportunity

The project, focused in Khsach Kandal district, aims to train approximately 100 women in the intricate art of flower-pattern silk weaving. Participants will receive not only materials and equipment but also comprehensive vocational training to master this traditional craft. To adapt to modern markets, the project incorporates the use of digital tools and business training, enabling participants to reach broader audiences and meet evolving consumer demands.

Further enhancing its impact, the program offers coaching and mentorship, ensuring these women grow as entrepreneurs and community leaders. By blending tradition with innovation, this initiative seeks to transform silk weaving into a creative symbol of Cambodia’s cultural identity and economic resilience.

A Strong Partnership

Dr. Khobragade emphasized the Indian Embassy’s steadfast commitment to empowering Cambodian women. Highlighting the shared history and values between the two nations, she remarked, “Through this collaboration, we are not merely investing in a single project but in Cambodian women, their potential, and their dreams. Empowering women is not just a goal; it is the solution to various challenges, from poverty reduction to sustainable development.”

The ambassador also recognized the importance of women in driving social transformation, acknowledging their role in leading families and communities toward a brighter, more inclusive future.

Minister Kantha Phavi expressed her deep gratitude to the Indian Embassy for its trust and vision in supporting this initiative, emphasizing its alignment with Cambodia’s broader goals of cultural preservation and economic empowerment.

A Catalyst for Growth

This project is part of India’s Act East Policy, which seeks to enhance economic, cultural, and strategic relations with Asia-Pacific nations. By empowering women and preserving Cambodia’s cultural heritage, the initiative serves as a catalyst for sustainable economic development, reinforcing the bonds of friendship between India and Cambodia.

With its focus on skill-building, entrepreneurship, and cultural preservation, this project is poised to create lasting opportunities for Cambodian women while honoring the nation’s timeless traditions.
