The Royal Government of Cambodia (RGC), in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), recently convened a national workshop aimed at devising a strategy to broaden the milled rice market. This initiative seeks to gather insights from various stakeholders to pinpoint and address challenges that hinder rice production capabilities.
Cham Nimul, the Minister of Commerce, led the workshop titled ‘Formulation Process of Cambodia’s Milled Rice Market Expansion and Diversification Strategy’. During the event, Nimul outlined the advantages of pursuing a broader and more varied rice market for Cambodia, noting the significance of rice as a central agricultural sector in the country. She underscored the pivotal role of this strategy in guiding the RGC’s efforts, particularly the Ministry of Commerce’s endeavors, to diversify markets and boost rice exports globally from 2024 to 2030.
Nimul also put forth two crucial areas for thorough discussion among all participants. The first area involves the safeguarding of trademarks, intellectual property, and the development of a collective brand. The second focuses on enhancing rice quality by addressing various factors such as production volume, product quality, safety standards, and the visual appeal of packaging.
Tat Puthsodary, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Commerce, elaborated on the broader context of the initiative, outlining five primary objectives. These include maintaining peace, political stability, security, and public order; adhering to a principled, rule-based, and strategic foreign policy; ensuring macroeconomic and financial stability; fostering inclusive and effective partnerships; and promoting integration into regional and global economies.
This collaborative effort between the RGC and FAO represents a significant step towards strengthening Cambodia’s position in the global rice market. By addressing production challenges and emphasizing market diversification and quality enhancement, Cambodia aims to secure a more robust and resilient agricultural sector, contributing to the nation’s overall economic growth and stability.
