In a significant move to solidify the foundation of economic diplomacy while exploring key opportunities for cooperation and investment within Cambodia, a delegation led by His Excellency OUK Sophorn, Under-Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFA.IC), embarked on an insightful two-day visit on 26-27 April 2024. The delegation, representing Her Excellency KHIEV Sophany, Secretary of State in charge of Economic Diplomacy, comprised 25 officials who had just concluded a comprehensive training course in “Economic Diplomacy” offered by the National Institute of Diplomacy and International Cooperation (NIDIR). This meticulously planned visit targeted two pivotal economic landmarks: the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone (SSEZ) and the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, both of which are critical to Cambodia’s burgeoning economic landscape.
Sihanoukville, known for its vital role in enhancing Cambodia’s economic stature, was the focus of this mission, aimed at unraveling the fabric of business and investment prospects within the province. Mr. LONG Dimanche, the Deputy Governor of Preah Sihanouk Province, facilitated a comprehensive presentation titled “Business and Investment Opportunities in Preah Sihanouk Province”. This presentation served as a highlight of the visit, providing deep insights into the province’s strategic importance and the myriad of opportunities it holds for national and international investors.
The Sihanoukville Special Economy Zone (SSEZ) and the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port were meticulously chosen as focal points for this study visit due to their significant contributions to Cambodia’s export-import processes and their role as critical hubs for international business transactions. The visit to these sites allowed the officials to firsthand witness the operational dynamics, infrastructural advancements, and the economic vibrancy that these entities bring to the region.
The experience was aimed at achieving several key objectives. Foremost was to equip the MFA.IC officials with a robust understanding of the strategic areas of cooperation and investment opportunities, essential for promoting Cambodia’s economic interests abroad. Furthermore, the visit was structured to align with the goals outlined in the MFA.IC’s economic diplomacy strategy, ensuring that the insights gained would directly contribute to more proactive and efficient economic diplomacy efforts.
This exploration into Sihanoukville’s economic environment underscores a significant step towards fostering a conducive environment for international trade and investment in Cambodia. By gaining an in-depth understanding of the province’s economic landscape, the MFA.IC officials are now better positioned to advocate for and facilitate the kind of international cooperation and investment that aligns with Cambodia’s long-term economic aspirations. The visit not only highlighted the tangible aspects of the province’s economic achievements but also showcased the potential for future growth and collaboration on a scale that transcends borders, making it a cornerstone exercise in the practical application of economic diplomacy.
