During a meeting with representatives of Cambodia’s informal economy at OCIC in Phnom Penh, Prime Minister Hun Manet provided an update on the Funan Techo canal project, which aims to connect the country’s river to the sea. The premier announced that the construction is scheduled to commence by the end of 2024 or, at the latest, by 2025.
Prime Minister Hun Manet expressed his confidence in the project during the meeting, emphasizing the dedication of the government to complete the canal. He also highlighted the additional agreement scheduled to be signed in October, likely during his visit to China. The Framework Agreement between the Cambodian government and the construction company has already been signed, outlining the project’s fundamental principles. Between July and September, further signings are expected to take place, setting the stage for the construction to begin as planned in 2024 or by 2025 at the latest.
Amidst his comments, Prime Minister Hun Manet called upon all Cambodian citizens, irrespective of political affiliations or religious backgrounds, to unite with the Royal Government in supporting the successful implementation of the Funan Techo Canal Project. The prime minister emphasized that the project serves the national interest and holds the potential to bring benefits to all individuals across the country.
The Funan Techo canal project has long been envisioned as a critical infrastructure development in Cambodia, aimed at establishing a direct connection between the river and the sea. Expected to boost trade, enhance transportation, and stimulate economic growth, the canal’s construction signifies a significant step towards further development and progress for the nation.
With the prime minister’s announcement, the attention now shifts towards the upcoming agreement signing and subsequent preparations for the canal’s construction. The canal’s impact on trade facilitation and economic growth is eagerly anticipated, as it promises to open new opportunities and foster greater connectivity for Cambodia in the years to come.
As the construction of the Funan Techo canal approaches, the nation awaits this transformative project that has the potential to strengthen Cambodia’s position in the region and provide long-term benefits to the Cambodian people.
