The 16th Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) meeting, a pivotal gathering aimed at reinforcing and fostering collaborative ties between the two neighboring nations, took place at the Garden City Phnom Penh Hotel from March 18 to 22, 2024. This event, hosted by the Cambodian Ministry of National Defence, serves as a platform for dialogue and cooperation on matters related to border security and bilateral relations.
General Tea Seiha, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence for Cambodia, together with Sutin Klungsang, Thailand’s Minister of National Defence, co-chaired this significant meeting. Both officials play a central role in the General Boundary Committee of Cambodia and the Thai General Border Commission, respectively, showcasing the importance both countries place on these discussions.
The establishment of the GBC under a 2006 agreement between the Royal Government of Cambodia and the Royal Government of Thailand set the stage for annual meetings focused on defence and security issues along the shared border. These gatherings are critical for addressing mutual concerns, promoting peace, and ensuring the prosperity of the regions adjacent to the border.
This year’s meeting, led by the respective delegations of General Tea Seiha and Sutin Klungsang, aimed to build upon the foundation of cooperation established in previous sessions. The agenda included discussions on a variety of key issues, including the enhancement of friendly relations between the military forces of both nations, the maintenance of peace and stability, and collaborative development efforts along the border areas.
Moreover, the meeting provided an opportunity to jointly tackle challenges that arise along the border, ensuring the safety and well-being of the people residing in these areas. The collaborative efforts between Cambodia and Thailand through the GBC meetings underscore a shared commitment to resolving border issues amicably and working together towards the mutual prosperity of both nations.
